Men win December Invite, Women take second

The December invitational marks the halfway point in the college swimming season.  It's a great benchmark for the team and also an ideal time to test out a short taper and wear a race suit.  The meet this year was among the most competitive we've seen.  With fierce competition from both Oakland and Wayne State, EMU had their work cut out for them.  There were quite a few impressive swims and at least one pool record broken during the meet.  Both the Men and Women should be very proud of their performances.  After the final session on Saturday, the Men bested Oakland by 6 points and the women took second to Oakland by 154 but beat Wayne State, Ashland, and IUPUI by a wide margin.  Great job EMU!

EMU Men vs Northwestern University

Based on the results, the Mens team put up a good fight against Northwestern.  I was onsite to photograph the meet but due to a referee scheduling error, the meet was delayed over an hour and I had to scoot out of there early.  I did get some pictures of 1 meter diving, which was moved to the beginning of the meet as well as the Medley and 1000 Freestyle.  They will be posted soon.  Great job guys!

Green and White Intersquad!

Each year EMU gears up for the season by swimming each other in a fun meet known as the Intersquad (green and white) meet.  The team is divided up into two squads and captains pick who will be on each team.  The goal is to balance teams to make the meet as close as possible.  As arbirary as it is, there have been some long streaks of the "Green" or "White" team winning multiple years in a row and naturally those silly stats are always thrown around once the teams for each year are announced.  The swimmers and divers create a strong rivalry in the days leading up to the actual meet and some trash talking is certainly part of the ritual.  In the end, fun is had by all and it's great practice for the first real meet of the year against an EMU competitor.

Although no pictures or video were taken, the stories from the meet where pretty impressive!  Some especially fast swimming was reported from this years' intersquad meet at EMU this past weekend.  No results are posted since it is a private event.  GO EMU!

Lesley Vizurraga NCAA Results!

Congrats to Lesley Vizurraga for competing in the NCAA Division 1 Diving Championships!  Simply competing in the meet is a great honor for both Lesley and EMU Diving!  Lesley scored 35th in the 1-meter and 33rd in the 3-meter.  I can't think of a better way to go out as a senior than making it to the highest profile meet in the country!  We're very proud to have had her represent the University. Great Job Lesley!

Lesley Vizurraga To Compete in NCAA Division I Diving Championships

Lesley is on her way to the Division 1 NCAA Diving Championships!  Lesley earned her spot to compete at the national level by placing third on the One Meter boards at Zones in Columbus Ohio.  We'll be watching!  Congratulations on your success thus far Lesley

Keeping an eye on NCAA rankings

Each year we watch as the times roll in to the NCAA rankings with the hope that a few EMU swimmers will have an opportunity to represent us at the Division 1 National Championships.  This year is no different when looking at standout performances like Troy Esentan's 200 Breast and 400 IM, Jake Heybloms 100 Breaststroke and Jacob Hanson's 100 and 200 Backstroke.  This year we came pretty close with a few of those swims.  The highest ranking being Jacob Hanson's 200 Backstroke of 1:43.83.  Although all the times have not been reported (MAC times are not currently in the list yet), it looks like Hanson will be dangerously close to the always changing time/placement cut off.  Right now it looks like the last time to make it in was a 1:43.77 but this list may change.  We're all hoping for him to squeak in before it's finalized.  Again, great job to all the EMU Men and Women this year!

4,122 Pictures from 2011 Mens MACs

I'm busy editing, cropping and correcting 4,122 images taken at the Mens 2011 MACs.  My only wish is that I could have made it to the womens meet to offer the same to that team.  Hopefully next year!  Men's images will be available in the gallery within the next few days

Jacob Hanson awarded Swimmer of the Meet!

Sorry for the delay in news!  Jacob Hanson wins the "Swimmer of the Meet"!  Jacob won the 200IM, 100 Backstroke and 200 Backstroke as well as being a very important part of the 400 Free relay, 200 Medley Relay and 400 Medley Relay.  Congrats Jacob!

A Reflection Upon The Championships This Weekend

I had the honor of being invited to join the team for a meal after the meet.  There were more smiles, laughs and handshakes than I can describe.  It was a wonderful environment to end the season with.  The uplifting side of this weekend's outcome is that this team knows it did everything it could during this meet.  They had fun, they swam their hearts out and they supported each other while surrounded with the people who care the most about them.  They gave it their all, and they are proud of their accomplishments.  Although we did not win this year, it's made us all appreciate our other victories over the years, and made us consider what we can improve upon in the future.  As always, it was an honor to be an EMU supporter this weekend.    I love this team and I'm proud of you no matter what.  Thank you all for your kind words and your appreciation for my efforts. This team makes me proud to say I'm an Eastern Alumni, keep up the good work.  Great Job EMU!
